Interesting morning today. We took one of the Children's Zoo ponies to an equine specialty practice in Irving for a second opinion. Other than having to get to work an hour earlier than usual (6am) it wasn't half bad.
They were so well organized, and had all the proper equipment, you know, the stuff you can have when you're not limited to the tiny budget the city gives out. The procedures took about an hour to complete. If we had done the same, we would have been looking at three or four.
They had a wall mounted x-ray film holder. We have a contraption I McGuyver-ed out of an IV stand, rope and baling wire. We also have a contraption I made out of an old x-ray film box, duct tape, and two broomsticks.
I'm totally serious about building the equipment, the first suggestion was "oh, we'll just put on a glove and hold the plate". Excuse me, no fucking way. I don't care if it isn't my hand, I'm still not allowing my co-workers to be exposed to radiation unnecessarially - nevermind that it's illegal. Either buy us a real cassette holder, either wall mounted, or more realistically one that is portable so we can take it on barn procedures, or use the really embarrassingly unprofessional ones that I built.
